CANADA ANNOUNCES DRUG CRACKDOWN

December 22, 2004 Canada's Minister of Health Kristine Keeler announced today a vigorous crackdown on the importation of medical drugs from the United States. At a noon press conference, she decried the recent increase in the purchase of drugs from the U.S., mostly in transactions over the internet.

Ms. Keeler stated that it was her duty to warn Canadian citizens that drugs from the United States may not be safe for use. Neither the Ministry of Health nor the FDA in the U. S. could vouch for the safety of these imported drugs.

As part of this initiative, two new units of the Ministry would be formed immediately, one to prevent further drug importation and one to provide care for those with severe side effects from the use of drugs from U.S pharmaceutical companies.
