Not sure how close it was, but after distinguished military career General Douglas MacArthur might have, despite being justifiedly removed from command by President Truman, might well have become President. After a strong, rousing speech before Congress, MacArthur received public adulation, which aroused expectations that he would run for president. Fortunately, he did not run and we were spared that outcome. Although he had a better brain, MacArthur had an arrogance and ego even larger than Trump's.
