THE SPECTRE OF GAY MARRIAGE IS BACK

On Wednesday October 25th, the New Jersey Supreme Court decided that gay couples are entitled to the same legal rights and financial benefits as heterosexual couples and gave the legislature 180 days to amend or enact laws to achieve this result. Republicans, searching for an issue - any issue - to divert voters' attention away from Iraq and other failures, immediately seized upon gay marriage as that issue. It worked in 2004 so why not now?

Yesterday, in Iowa, the Republican-in-Chief, President Bush, said "Yesterday in New Jersey, we had another activist court issue a ruling that raises doubts about the institution of marriage,” Mr. Bush drew applause when he reiterated his long-held stance that marriage was “a union between a man and a woman,” adding, “I believe it’s a sacred institution that is critical to the health of our society and the well-being of families, and it must be defended.”.

Well, we certainly want to defend traditional marriage against this dire threat. Gay marriage probably also is a threat against the "war.on terror", as well as being responsible for illegal immigration and the rise of Nancy Pelosi. If the Bush administration believed in scientific research, it should appoint a well-respected research group to document how traditional marriage has been severely damaged by the thousands of gay couples who have wed.
