SHARPTON DEMANDS REPARATIONS FROM THURMOND HEIRS

The discovery that one of Strom Thurmond's relatives once owned the Rev. Al Sharpton's great-grandfather came as a shock to Mr. Sharpton. It almost rendered him speechless.

Making a rapid recovery, Sharpton said that he intended to seek reparations from the family of Senator Thurmond, the noted segregationist. He pointed out that, unlike the general, toothless apology of the Virginia legislature, his family had a specific case of injury and the benefit to the Thurmonds. Not only that, but the ownership of Sharpton's great grandfather by Thurmond's ancester enabled Strom Thurmond to rise to a position where he caused continued damage to Sharpton and other blacks.

The family of Mr. Thurmond could not be reached for comment.
