THE PLEDGE DRIVE

Our local public service station just completed its Fall pledge drive. In an effort to reduce listener pain, it cut the number of days from 10 to 8. Whether it increased the number of those agonizing program interruptions is hard to tell.

Since we all consider these drives as roughly equivalent to sharing a prison cell with an insurance agent, I wonder if there could be any technological escape from the solicitations. Might it be possible to provide a high contribution option that would eliminate the interruptions? Maybe an electronic version of the week's programs, free of the pleading, could be furnished to those who were willing to pay for the privilege.

I don't have the solution, but maybe someone else does.
