NORTH CAROLINA'S DESCENT

North Carolina used to be praised as a progressive state, the most progressive in the South. It was known for its high education standards and wise policies. But, now, over the past few years, it has been falling to the level of some of the worst states. Some examples:

The Legislature tried to pass a law mandating that predictions of sea level increase could not exceed prior actual average rise per year. (Next, halting the tide?)

It has adopted a ban on same-sex marriage.

One of the nation's most restrictive abortion laws went into effect after a federal judge temporarily halted the law's most controversial requirement — that a woman getting an abortion must first view a narrated ultrasound image of the fetus. Other sections of the law were upheld, including a 24-hour waiting period to provide information on abortion risks and alternatives.

It has enacted or will enact, a photo ID voting requirement, and perhaps early voting restrictions, designed to make it difficult for certain groups to vote.

It is pushing to lower income taxes and raise sales taxes.

There has and will be more, as Republicans strive to make it a reactionary, dark red state.

Comment from friend: "Chapel Hill was once considered the state zoo, by Helms. I think the zoo has now moved to the legislative building in Raleigh. "

Your vote against gun control measures shows a level of bravery that will no doubt find you under the bed when an intruder comes.
