Turkish Warplanes Attack Kurds Near Border

The situation is heating up at the Turkey-Iraq border in the Kurdish region of Iraq. The PKK rebel group uses bases on the Iraq side to support its guerilla warfare against the government of Turkey. The Turkish army has amassed a force at this border threatening incursions against these bases.

Whatever the merits of the cause of the Kurds within Turkey, and the need for the Turkish government to protect its citizens against PKK killings, the danger to Iraq and the region is clear and imminent. The U.S. is responsible for the borders of Iraq.
Whether by diplomacy, troop deployment, or other protective measures, let us hope that our government will give this higher priority than fences at our border with Mexico.
