THE STAR SPANGLISH BANNER

NEWS ITEM - President Bush sides with conservatives in opposition to the Spanish version of the Star Spangled Banner.
The New York Times quotes him: "And I think people who want to be a citizen of this country ought to
learn English," Mr. Bush said. "And they ought to learn to sing the national anthem in English."

COMMENT - President Bush is right. If the Spanishistas in our country can get away with putting our national antherm in
Spanish, next thing you know we'll have Spanish language versions of government forms, ballots,
restaurant menus, customer service hot lines, and maybe even newspapers.

STEM CELL RESEARCH AND GAY UNIONS

from the New York Times:

WASHINGTON, April 23 — About 50 prominent religious leaders, including seven Roman Catholic cardinals and about a half-dozen archbishops, have signed a petition in support of a constitutional amendment blocking same-sex marriage.

Another article notes that the question of whether the government should support or limit stem cell research has cropped up in Senate races in Maryland and Missouri, and in House races in California, Colorado, Illinois, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Washington and Wisconsin
President Bush tackled the topic in August 2001 by imposing strict limits on taxpayer financing of embryonic stem cell research. He has vowed to veto any measure that would loosen those restrictions

Comment

Don't those on the religious right and others opposing gay unions and stem cell research realize that intensive stem cell research might well lead to a breakthrough that eliminates gayness?
